Let's talk about sustainability - Let's talk about the environment - What is our impact ?

How to keep your clothes in good shape for longer

This is nothing new to our grandparents but it needs to be reminded nowadays…many things can be done to help us keep our clothes for longer and in better shape while being beneficial for the environment!

Do you know what is the average water quantity used per laundry load? Well, from 50L to 140L depending on the machine type and selected cycle; so you can do a quick calculation of your weekly, monthly and yearly water consumption just for washing your clothes!

So yes, washing clothes less often, on the reverse side to reduce peelings, at low temperature, full load, with a short cycle (if possible) and hanging it to dry + removing small stains ‘on the go’ and while still 'fresh' with water and soap will greatly improve your clothes’ longevity in term of fabric’s shape and look.

** How many time have we found ourselves in the restaurant’s bathroom rubbing out some stains off our clothes with soap and rinsing it in the sink while still on? (Hand dryers come very handy in that case) 😄 Even though the time spent in bathroom and some not completely dry parts on our clothes could sometimes be awkward when reaching back our seat, the satisfaction of having successfully salvaged a great piece of clothing was the best feeling ever! 🙌🏼✨**

Also mending is very important. In the old times they didn’t have the ‘luxury’ of throwing away pieces of clothing or fabrics that were wearing off; they had to maintain and repair it as often as needed until it simply became impossible to fix any more. Even in that case they were resourceful enough in finding other ways to use their old pieces of clothing in their day to day life. Throwing away was simply not in their mindset.

There are so many free tutorial videos available on the internet today about pretty stitching techniques to cover up holes or stains, to adjust garment’s’ fit or to do very simple mending. If you don’t feel like a crafty, you can always find somebody eager to help in your friends or family circles, or at least a good seamstress in your neighbourhood!
